My girlfriend and I are interested in an exclusive polyamorous relationship. This has raised all sorts of questions! Can we all three go out for dates? Do we all hold hands? What if hypothetically it got to the point of having kids? How do you even? Is it suddenly illegal at some point?

Based on your questions, by “exclusive polyamorous relationship” do you mean that you’re interested in a triad?

Regardless of what you mean, the answers to many of these questions are solely up to you and your partners to decide through open, honest, communication and continued conversation on these topics.

There’s no reason you can’t all go out for dates together, and there’s no reason you can’t all hold hands (unless you run out given most people only have 2). When it comes to hypothetical children things get more complicated. Legal guardianship is a tricky subject that you may want to consider talking to a lawyer about if you consider having kids or adopting.

There have been instances where polyamory has been used against people in court in order to deny custody of children. This is another case where a lawyer should be involved.

None of us have a large amount of legal experience, so the best advice I can offer is that all of these things are topics deserving open, on going conversation between all partners involved in order to find out what will make you all happy.

Sorry if I couldn’t be of more help.
